WWW Wednesday – 1.30.19

Welcome to WWW Wednesday! This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words. If you participated in your own post, please feel free to leave a link in the comments, so I and others can see! Otherwise, feel free to leave a comment with your responses. I’m always happy to hear what other people are reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

I’ve emerged long enough from playing Kingdom Hearts III to do this tag, so let’s friggin’ do it!

What are you currently reading?

the night tiger

I’m currently reading an ARC of The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo. I fell in love with Choo’s debut novel The Ghost Bride, so I’ve been itching to get my hands on this one. As a coming-of-age novel of a child and a young woman, people who 1930s Malaysia would prefer to stay invisible, this standalone also features Chinese superstitions, the emphasis of twins, men who turn into tigers, ghostly dreamscapes, and at the heart of it all, a mystery.

So far, I’m loving Choo’s prose and insights into what life in colonial Malaysia was like, and all the characters are coming to life on the page—even the ones who are dead. Ren, Ji Lin, and Shin are my favorites so far, but we’ll see how it goes.

What did you recently finish reading?

Finished 1/25/19 | Rating: ★★★★★

I just finished Gemina, the second book in the Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, and it was incredible. It took me longer to latch on to Hanna and Nik than I did Kady and Ezra in Illuminae, but once the action took off, Hanna and Nik both showed up. I continue to love how amazing the female characters in particular are in this trilogy, and the stakes continue to rise and rise, to satisfying results. I think Illuminae is still my favorite overall so far, but it’s a close contest. And while I missed psychopathic AIDAN tragically, Gemina gave me a new evil villain to love: Lieutenant Travis “Cerberus” Falk. Never before has someone said, “Bliss,” and made it sounds so hot and terrifying at the same time. That’s how you villain, y’all.

What do you think you’ll read next?

That is a good ass question. I’ve had on my unofficial “on hold” shelf two books: Vision of the Future by Timothy Zahn and Gun Moll by Bethany-Kris and Erin Ashley Tanner, and I’d like to get those officially done. The former is part of Thrawn’s story in Star Wars, and what’s taken me so long to finish it is I didn’t expect how long it actually was (those pages are thin and deceiving). As for the latter, it really hasn’t wowed me at all, but I still need to give it more of a chance.

Otherwise, I’m going to read The Language of Thorns before I meet Leigh Bardugo again on her King of Scars book tour (yay!) and also Obsidio, the last book in the Illuminae Files.

What’s your WWW Wednesday looking like? What have you read lately, and what are you eyeing next?
