WWW Wednesday – 5.22.19

Welcome to WWW Wednesday! This meme was formerly hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm and revived on Taking on a World of Words. If you participated in your own post, please feel free to leave a link in the comments, so I and others can see! Otherwise, feel free to leave a comment with your responses. I’m always happy to hear what other people are reading.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

I’ve started reading The Iron Thorn by Caitlin Kittredge. It’s still too early to tell if I’ll like this book or not. I actually chose to read it because I’ve owned it since 2011 and never read it, so I figured it’s now or never. (Also, when I bought it, I thought it was titled The Iron Throne, not Thorn, haha. Was I seeking Game of Thrones early and just didn’t know it?) It’s about a plague that causes madness, featuring a main character whose time is running out in potentially succumbing to madness like her mother and brother before her. There’s some steampunk action going on, too but can’t comment on more than that.

I also started an ARC of Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. I’ve had my eye on this author since she came out with Reflection, but I’m glad I’ve experienced her first through her original work. So far, I’m loving this one.

Maia is a really fun character, and the plot is merciless on her. Girls are forbidden to become master tailors, but, under the guise of a boy, Maia decides she will become the Imperial Tailor to save her family. To be chosen, she must pass a series of challenges to please the emperor’s reluctant bride-to-be, not knowing she will be given the most impossible task of all: to sew three dresses from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. This book has been incredibly imaginative so far, full of intrigue, mystery, and entertaining characters. Lim has my number on both the emperor and the Lord Enchanter Edan; these two characters are my type, and I am so invested to see where the rest of this is going.

What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw, and my experience with it was very middle-of-the-road, which was somewhat of a letdown. I’d been hearing glowing reviews about it, so much so that I was leaping to start it. The tale of a town cursed by three witches who come back every year to possess girls and drown boys seemed like a great one, and for the first half of it, I was greatly enjoying myself.

But the Big Reveal of who the third sister was left a bad taste in my mouth, and I didn’t buy the sudden narrative shift that occurred as a result. The ending tanked what would’ve been an easy four or five star from me. I just couldn’t jive with the ending or what the point of it all was—to say nothing of the unresolved plot thread with Penny’s father, unless I just somehow missed it because of how quickly or underwhelmingly it was handled.

I also started to read an ARC of Storm and Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout that I quickly DNF’d at 12%. That’s really fast for me to discard a book, but I could tell right away this book wasn’t for me and wasn’t likely to improve. Gargoyles that are…supermodel gorgeous? Seriously? Holy…crapsicles? How old am I? What year is it? It just read and felt extremely juvenile, and the main character’s thought process was utterly painful to read. It’s a bummer because I’ve read other things by Armentrout before, and I remember enjoying them. They weren’t examples of outstanding prose, but they definitely weren’t this bad, either. I wonder what happened here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Hmm, good question.

So I have an ARC of Wicked Fox coming to me in the mail, but I’m not sure when it will arrive. If it comes before I finish my current reads, I’ll definitely start it. If not, then I’ll read my ARC of The Enchanted Sonata that I haven’t had a chance to get to yet.

As for my real, corporal TBR stack, it’s time to start To Kill a Kingdom at last. I’ve heard so many glowing things; it seems like it will be right up my alley.

Thanks again, everyone!

    • I’ll be posting a review of Spin the Dawn soon, but I hope you enjoy it when it comes out. I had a great time with the story; it was so imaginative. So I just started To Kill a Kingdom, and the first chapter already captured my attention. So excited for the rest! I love me some good banter.
